Make workers responsive of labour law

Speakers at a workshop underscored the need for making workers well aware of concerned labour laws and ensuring equal application of them for all. Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka and Bangladesh Employers Federation jointly organised the workshop in cooperation with Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and International labour Organisation at CCCI auditorium in the city on Thursday. Presiding over the workshop titled, “Formalization of Informality in The Construction Sector” CCCI President Mahbubul Alam said that informal employment comprises around 89% of the total employment in the country. These persons of informal employment are mostly less educated and unskilled. The CCCI president underscored the need for introducing legal framework and compulsion for informal employment and opening more training centres to produce skilled manpower for export in the increasing global labour market. CCCI Vice-President Syed Jamal Hossain conducted the workshop where CCCI directors Mahfuzul Haque Shah and SM Shamsuddin, REHAB President Abu Sufian, Engineer Iftekhar Hossain of CPDL, Md ASM Moyeen of Sanmar Group of Companies, Murtaza Hussain of BSRM, Bangladesh Employers Federation Secretary Shakib Quraishi and Bangladesh Association of Construction Industry Secretary Md Zulfiqar Ali addressed while Syed Latif Hossain presented the keynote paper. The speakers observed that efforts should be made for ensuring workers’ rights following laobur laws. They also called for making some changes in the labour laws considering perspective of Bangladesh as a developing country.
