The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association on Monday cancelled membership of 78 readymade garment factories in Dhaka and Chittagong zones. A BGMEA source said all the 78 factories remained closed for long. At a meeting of the board of directors of the BGMEA, the membership of 74 RMG factories were cancelled as the companies failed to comply with the trade body’s terms and conditions including subscription fees, BGMEA vice-president Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu told New Age. He said that authorities of four other factories withdrew the membership of their units from the trade body willingly as their units remained inoperative for long. According to the BGMEA, the trade body has more than 3,610 member factories in Dhaka and 705 in Chittagong.
