Dhaka-Ankara trade: Call to lower tariff to boost

Turkey-Bangladesh

President of Turkey-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TBCCI) Halef Ozkvrt urged the governments of Turkey and Bangladesh to reduce tariffs on imported goods to increase the bilateral trade to the tune of $3.0 billion, said a Statement. He was speaking at an Iftar party hosted by TBCCI in the city recently. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2013 agreed to increase the trade volume between Bangladesh and Turkey from 1 billion US dollars to 3.0 billion US dollars. Turkey has imposed 15 per cent duty on imported readymade garments from Bangladesh to protect its textile industry. Bangladesh also imposes high duty on Turkish goods. Turkey and Bangladesh have agreed to sign free trade agreement (FTA) to increase bilateral trade. The TBCCI president said that series of bi-lateral agreements have been signed between governments of Bangladesh and Turkey. Both the governments should come forward to implement these bi-lateral agreements and remove the business barriers, he said.
