Companies in Bangladesh are weighing private sector investment potentials in Haiti, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said today, disclosing that a private group has already decided to invest in clothing sector there, report BSS. “Haiti enjoys duty-free access to USA for textile exports. It is assumed that private investments in textiles by Bangladesh companies there would be beneficial,” the minister said while exchanging views with a visiting Haiti delegation at his office here, said an official handout. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometers in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community and the second-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole. Tofail said the Ha-Meem Group, a leading clothing producer, has already decided to invest in Haiti, a country where Bangladesh armed forces personnel are also engaged in UN peace mission since 2004. He said Bangladesh has also made an initial export mark of 1.5 million US dollars to Haiti last year. Welcoming the Haiti delegation, the commerce minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has not only provided domestic and international businesses to grow in Bangladesh, but also ushered in a new era for international investments as well in 100 special economic zones, some of which are on operation now. Investments from any country, including Haiti, would be welcomed, he said.
