No state-owned textile mills make profit in last fiscal

Textiles and Jute Minister Md Emaz Uddin Pramanik told the Parliament on Sunday that no state-owned textiles mills made any profit in last fiscal year.

“There’re 20 state-owned textile mills under Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC). But no mill saw any profit in the last fiscal year,” he said replying to an unstarred question from Awami League MP Pinu Khan (Women Seat-23).

The minister, however, said the government has no plan to lease out the loss-incurring textile mills.

In reply to a starred question from Workers’ Party MP Hazera Khatun, Emaz Uddin said BJMC exported some 85,209 tonnes of jute products and earned foreign currency of Tk 659.03 crore in the 2015-16 fiscal years.

BJMC exported jute products of Tk 747.43 crore in 2014-15 fiscal year, while it earned Tk 629.42 crore in 2013-14 and Tk 1380.45 crore in 2012-13.

In 1991-92 fiscal year, the corporation exported jute products of Tk 551 crore.

For the current fiscal year of 2016-17, BJMC has set a target of exporting jute products of Tk 1,263.93 crore.
