Apparel factories moving away from digital wage disbursement: Experts

Notwithstanding the fact that electronic transfer of salary provides lots of benefits, many apparel manufacturing units in Bangladesh that disbursed wages to the workers digitally at the height of the coronavirus pandemic are now gradually returning to cash payments. This was underlined by speakers taking part at a recent event titled, RMG Payroll Digitalisation: Experience and Expectations, held at hotel capital Dhaka.

Taking part in the event, chief commercial officer of bKash — bKash is the largest mobile financial service (MFS) in Bangladesh — Mizanur Rashid, reportedly, stated that around 30 per cent of apparel factories, which started disbursing workers’ wages through bKash, are returning to traditional cash disbursement system even as figures suggest that before the pandemic, 4 lakh workers from 300 factories used to receive salaries through bKash, even if the number of workers getting payment digitally rose to 11 lakh after the Government imposed a lockdown in March last year to slow the spread of the coronavirus, but now around 7.50 lakh workers, reportedly, receive salaries through bKash.

…many have returned to previous method of cash disbursement, reportedly, stated Mizanur at the event while adding that digital disbursement of salary has lots of benefits.
