July-Sept export to Europe sees moderate growth

The country’s export to key European destinations like Germany, the UK, Italy, France showed moderate performance during the first quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal (2017-2018) compared to the same period of the previous fiscal (2016-2017), reports UNB.During this July-September period, export to Germany, the second largest destination of Bangladesh exportable items, totalled $1,386.07 million, which was 16 per cent of the total export earnings for the period.Of the amount, knitwear accounted for $806.15 million, woven garment $486.94 million and home textiles $19.76 million, according to latest figures released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).The EPB figures showed that exports to the UK during this period totalled $1,031.81 million, which was 11.91 per cent of the total export. The export of woven garment to the UK during the period was $432.93 million, knitwear $429.35 million, home textile $22.99 million, and bicycles $14.73 million.Exports to France during the July-September month period of the current fiscal reached $408.14 million, which accounted for 4.71 per cent of the total export earnings for the period.Exports to Italy totalled $344.59 million during the period with knitwear accounting for $231.93 million, woven garment $85.47 million and leather, leather products $4.84 million and footwear with $11.28 million.Exports to Belgium amounted to $220 million that included knitwear $88.63 million, woven garment $79.42 million and jute and jute made goods $4.34 million.Export earnings from the USA, the largest market for Bangladesh goods, registered a moderate performance during this July-September period with a growth of 3.95 per cent totalling $1,453.61 million, which was 16.78 per cent of the total export earnings for the three-month period.The Netherlands, another big export destination for Bangladesh, imported goods form Bangladesh worth $319.05 million during the July-September period.The amount included knitwear $127.73 million, woven garment $96.37 million and footwear $32.42 million.Among the other European, the Middle East, Far East and South Asian countries, exports to Russia fetched $85.48 million during this July-September while that of Japan totalled $245.28 million, Singapore $26.89 million and China $162.72 million.Of the South Asian countries, exports to India amounted to $154.88 million during the period that included jute and jute-made goods $35.49 million and woven garment $33.45 million.
