Professor IBA, Dhaka University, Director, BGMEA

Many of our customers have their own on-line shops, our products are sold both in their brick and mortar shops and virtually on their on-line shops. Working for brands who only operate online, is a little challenging for us under our current setup.

We are geared to do bigger volume orders and used to doing less complicated styling with high volume orders. Online business, on the other hand, is normally very small order size, numerous styles, very short lead time, none of them is our current strength.

We at BGMEA think that it is high time that Bangladesh starts developing our own online market place like Amazon, ASOS, BOOHOO, etc. Having to import fabrics in small quantities is not a very viable option and also with imported fabrics the lead time increases.

So, to develop online business in Bangladesh we must increase our fabric making capabilities and also diversify into lot of new variety of fabrics. I think there needs to be huge policy support to boost the online business.

I believe future customers will give emphasis on sustainable products and sourcing. Customers are now focusing on the online market.

This is the time we should together think about creating an online platform.

And from the industry side, we must be careful about the legal and financial terms, as many big names might go for bankruptcy.

Maheer Mannan

Deputy Managing Director, Shangu Tex Limited

This is the time we should together think about creating an online platform. When we look at the rise in customer acquisitions online we do not have to look further than Alibaba.

The Chinese sourcing giant founded by Jack Ma has seen business in China skyrocket due to their versatility over sectors and supplier ranking systems.

Not only due to the pandemic but when we look at this from a Bangladeshi point of view, we still follow a very traditional system of the business. Not only in the RMG sector but in all kinds.

We have to move past the shackles that are traditional business methods and move to more modern and tech-savvy solutions for our RMG sector.

With the help of online platforms such as Alibaba, global sources and DHgate, our manufacturers can come to global recognition.
