Back to business as Benapole port reopens after Eid holidays

Trucks wait at Benapole land port, just outside of India’s Petrapole checkpost, waiting to be cleared for export

The import and export of goods at the Indian port of Petrapole with Benapole resumed from Sunday, after the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday ended on May 15. From Sunday morning, trucks began coming and going on this route. Benapole Land Port Deputy Director (Administration) Abdul Jalil said that instructions have been issued to all concerned for quick delivery of goods. Sajedur Rahman, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agent Staff Welfare Association, said hundreds of trucks were stranded at Petrapole port during the Eid holidays. Despite announcing a month-long lockdown in West Bengal to prevent Covid-19 from spreading, its Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told businesses in a message from her office in Navanna to keep the import-export trade afloat in compliance with health regulations. It is learned that 400 to 450 trucks of various goods are imported from India and 150 to 200 trucks of goods are exported from Benapole port each day. Imported products include industrial raw materials, readymade garments and foodstuffs. Among the export products jute and jute products are significant. Every year, the government receives revenue of around Tk5,000 crore from imported goods at this port. Abdul Jalil, deputy director (administration) of Benapole Land Port, said 241 trucks entered through Benapole Port till 5.45pm on Sunday.
