Bangladesh is seventh largest importer of textiles globally: World Trade Statistical Review 2021

According to the World Trade Statistical Review 2021, Bangladesh became the seventh largest importer of textiles globally last year even as the report cited that in 2020 Bangladesh’s import of textiles from the other countries stood at US $ 8.81 billion.

The report further underlined that in 2020, Vietnam became the third leading importer of textiles — the textiles include textile yarn, woven man-made fibre fabrics, cotton fabrics, etc., according to Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) — followed by China, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The WTO statistics also showed that share of Bangladesh in the global textiles import market also fell 2.46 per cent in the last year which was 3.10 per cent in 2019 even as China remained the top exporter of textiles in the last year followed by the European Union and India.

The WTO publication maintained that owing to increased demand for protective personal equipment, global exports of textiles increased the most amongst manufactured goods in 2020, growing by 16.0 per cent.
